What is VoIP ?

VoIP, also known as IP Telephony, is where your phone calls travel over the Internet as data. Compared with your normal telephone service which turns voices into electronic signals which are then converted into sound by your telephone. VoIP, on the other hand, treats voice like any other piece of information being sent over the Internet; by digitising it into packets of data.

Do I need to change my phone number?

You may be able to use your existing phone number by porting it to the new provider.

Otherwise you can have an analog line connected to your phone system using an ATA card.

In the event you can't port or do not wish to, the new provider can allocate you a new number.

What is the call quality like?

Call quality depends on a number of factors such as which VoIP provider you choose, type of and speed of your internet connection.

VoIP call quality is often compared with mobile phone call quality.

What happens if my internet connection temporarily goes down?

If you have landlines connected to your phone system, your calls can fail-over to these during the outage, otherwise most people have a mobile phone close at hand.

It is recommended to have fail-over to landline or a mobile phone in the event of an emergency.
